Geography of Education Policy Analysis Lab (GEPAL) at the University of Kansas is housed under the Center for Research on Education and Work (CREW). GEPAL is dedicated to investigating the relationship between geography, education policy, and schooling practices. By integrating geographic information systems (GIS), mixed methods GIS (MMGIS), and qualitative research, the Lab explores how place and space shape and are shaped by educational policy.

GEPAL's researchers examine topics like school segregation, school choices, demographic change, and the spatial distribution of educational resources. The Lab’s approach encompasses a variety of processes and strategies aimed at integrating geographic analysis into educational policy research, including:

  • Employing GIS and MMGIS to map educational landscapes, identifying patterns of inequality and opportunities for policy intervention
  • Conducting qualitative research to understand the lived experiences of students and families in different geographic contexts
  • Sharing publicly available maps related to educational trends
  • Offering recommendations for policy and practice that promote spatial justice and educational equity

The Lab serves a broad spectrum of stakeholders, including:

  • Educational policymakers and administrators who are interested in using empirical research to address policy-related challenges
  • School districts and community organizations interested in the spatial allocation of educational resources.
  • Scholars in education and geography fields who want to learn and share new knowledge related to education policy
